Governors see first-hand progress of RAAC works at Airedale

June 2026

Governors at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust were given an in-depth look at progress on AGH Solutions’ extensive reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) programme during a site visit in April.

The tour was led by Kevin Keogh, Senior Project Manager at Robertson Construction and Airedale public governor. He was joined by fellow governors Chris Nolan, Chris Church, Linda Dobson and Peter Home.

During the visit, they saw first-hand both the scale of work already completed and the areas still due for clearance, including stripped-out wards

Linda Dobson described the visit as “brilliant”, adding:“It was interesting and informative. The amount of work involved was mind blowing. The size of the stripped-out wards was a surprise – they are huge. The expertise required to deal with the unexpected along the way is inspiring. I look forward to seeing the same wards when they are refurbished.”

Peter Home highlighted the wider impact of the programme and the complexity of the work: “Seeing the actual work being undertaken helps you fully appreciate the planning required. It is clear the team have developed an efficient and safe way of working within strict limitations, ensuring the hospital can continue to deliver the required services to our patients.”

Chris Nolan adds: “The tour was extremely interesting. Before entering the site, we discussed why the work was necessary and were able to handle a piece of RAAC – it was surprisingly lightweight, with a texture similar to pumice stone.

“Working within a live hospital environment brings additional challenges, but I’m looking forward to returning to see the completed ward.”

The visit provided governors with a valuable understanding of both the complexity and importance of the RAAC programme, which remains a key priority for the Trust in maintaining safe, high-quality care for patients while preparing for future development.
